POSITION SUMMARY

The LiDAR Scan Capture Technician is a field-based role within the Integrated Projects SCANIT team responsible for planning, executing, and quality-controlling high-accuracy 3D LiDAR scan capture across commercial, residential, and industrial project sites. Operating a variety of LiDAR scanning solutions, including the NavVis, Matterport Pro2 and Pro3, and FARO scanners, this technician delivers precise point cloud data that drives design, construction, and facility management workflows.

Travel is key for this role - our scan technicians can expect to travel 50% or more of the time to major metropolitan areas around the US. The role requires a self-directed professional who thrives in dynamic site environments and is comfortable working autonomously across a wide variety of project types and geographies.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

Field Scan Operations

  • Operate mobile LiDAR systems to capture interior and exterior environments on commercial, residential, and industrial project sites.
  • Operate terrestrial laser scanners including Faro, Matterport, and others.
  • Plan and execute scan routes to ensure complete, accurate, and overlapping coverage per project scope.
  • Perform pre-scan site assessments to identify access constraints, safety hazards, or conditions requiring special capture strategies.
  • Set up control targets and reference points to support registration accuracy and survey-grade deliverables.
  • Conduct on-site quality checks during and after capture to confirm point cloud completeness and data integrity.
  • Operate 360 video capture onsite for progress tracking and site monitoring.

Data Management & Processing

  • Offload, organize, and back up scan data in accordance with project naming conventions and file management protocols.
  • Perform initial registration and processing using NavVis IVION or comparable platforms, flagging issues for project leads.
  • Coordinate with the Integrated Projects team to deliver clean, properly structured data sets ready for downstream use in BIM, CAD, or facility management workflows.
  • Maintain detailed field logs documenting scan coverage, site conditions, equipment settings, and any anomalies encountered.

Equipment & Asset Management

  • Maintain the LiDAR system, accessories, and supporting equipment in peak operating condition.
  • Perform routine calibration checks, firmware updates, and preventive maintenance per manufacturer guidelines.
  • Track and manage equipment inventory, consumables, and battery systems to ensure readiness for consecutive deployment.
  • Report equipment issues, damage, or anomalies promptly to the Integrated Projects Manager.

Travel & Project Coordination

  • Travel to project sites nationwide (or as required), often with short lead times, to meet project milestones.
  • Coordinate with project managers, site superintendents, facility managers, and clients to schedule and execute scan sessions with minimal disruption to operations.
  • Adapt to diverse site conditions — active construction, occupied facilities, industrial process environments, and residential structures.
  • Adhere to site-specific safety requirements including PPE, badging, and access protocols.
  • Self-book and self-direct travel and complex logistics while aiming to minimize travel cost.

Communication & Reporting

  • Provide timely project status updates, field reports, and delivery confirmations to the Integrated Projects team.
  • Participate in pre-project kickoff calls and post-scan review sessions as needed.
  • Serve as the on-site point of contact for scan-related questions during project execution.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

  • Ability to read and interpret architectural, engineering, and construction drawings.
  • Strong spatial reasoning and attention to detail for thorough scan coverage planning.
  • Comfort working in diverse environments including active industrial facilities, construction sites, and occupied commercial spaces.
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record and ability to rent vehicles.
  • Willingness and ability to travel extensively, including overnight and multi-week deployments.
  • Excellent organizational skills and self-discipline for independent field operations.
  • Proficiency with standard computer systems, file management, and basic data transfer workflows.

Preferred

  • 2+ years of hands-on experience operating LiDAR scanning equipment in a professional or commercial context.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with mobile or static LiDAR systems (NavVis VLX, FARO Focus, Leica BLK, Matterport Pro, or equivalent).
  • Direct experience with the NavVis VLX3 system and NavVis IVION processing platform.
  • Familiarity with point cloud processing software such as NavVis IVION, Autodesk ReCap, Leica Cyclone, or similar.
  • Background in AEC (Architecture, Engineering, Construction), facility management, or survey industries.
  • Knowledge of BIM workflows and how scan data integrates with Revit, AutoCAD, or Navisworks.
  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification.
  • Experience with scan-to-BIM or as-built documentation projects.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

This position involves extensive physical activity in a variety of field environments. Candidates must be able to:

  • Wear and operate the NavVis MLX/VLX2/VLX3 harness system for extended scan sessions.
  • Wear and operate Faro Orbis, Faro Blink, Faro Focus scanners for extended scan sessions.
  • Walk, stand, climb stairs, and traverse uneven terrain for extended periods.
  • Lift and carry equipment cases up to 50 lbs.
  • Work in varying environmental conditions including heat, cold, dust, and noise typical of construction and industrial sites.
  • Wear required personal protective equipment (hard hat, safety vest, steel-toed boots, gloves, eye protection) as required.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

Salary range is $65,000 to 95,000 USD. Compensation will be commensurate with experience. Benefits include travel expense reimbursement per company policy, and eligibility for the company’s full benefits package including health, dental, vision, and paid time off.
