Proxima
Proxima is more than just a business to us; it's a vision of transforming the consumer technology landscape and giving B2C businesses the data they need to make informed decisions that drive highly performant actions. We are empowering our customers to achieve their greatest potential with innovative, data-driven solutions.
We are a first-of-its-kind data intelligence solution that leverages artificial intelligence and a proprietary database of over 60 million (and growing) unique shopper personas to enable businesses to achieve greater scale, efficiency, and financial success across their acquisition, retention, and operational strategies. We’re on a mission to help maximize their performance with AI-powered solutions that have traditionally been out of reach for most companies. We believe profitable growth starts with better data.
Proxima's Customer Explorer helps Shopify brands understand who their best customers are, why they buy, and how to find more of them. We turn raw purchase data into actionable insights that help brands make better decisions about product development, creative strategy, and marketing channels.
The problem we're solving: Consumer brands don't have just one ideal customer profile. Most have at least three, and some have as many as seven or eight. It's impossible to know who their customers are systematically, and how to market to them to reach all corners of their addressable market. Brands are stuck running campaigns that reach the same people over and over while missing entire segments they should be serving.
What we're building: A buyer genome that maps taste, values, life stage, and preferences down to size, color, and positioning. We have some of the best data in the world, and we're on a mission to help it unlock incredible value for brands. We use AI to enrich raw data (like who bought what) with context and meaning (like this style-conscious mom bought this eco-friendly toy set) to bring clarity to customer complexity.
Brands use us to answer questions like: Who should I target for this new product launch? What influencers should I work with to help promote it? In what types of homes should we stage our product images and ad visuals? What categories should we expand into? What colors should we offer next year? Our engine helps brands get the answers they need to grow and stand out in an incredibly competitive landscape.
You'll be our first design hire, shaping how brands like Cozy Earth, Venus et Fleur and Blind Barber explore and act on these insights.

How We Work

  • Prototype early and often: We test rough prototypes with customers weekly, developing new features with specific customers in mind, rather than what we think might be useful generally.
  • Decide early, update quickly: Make the call with incomplete information, ship it, then adapt based on what you learn.
  • Systems thinking: Build shared components once, reuse everywhere. Make it easy for future designers and engineers to do the right thing.
  • First design hire means first design culture: You'll have significant influence on how we work, what we prioritize, and how design shapes the product.

What You'll Own

  • Co-create with customers: run short discovery and usability sessions with our brands, incorporate learnings into weekly iterations, help us get to "useful" fast.
  • Collaborate with product and engineering to shape what our models surface (customer segments, cross-brand look-alikes, LTV predictors, taste profiles) and how we explain "why this matters."
  • Shape our design culture from the ground up. You'll set the tone for how we work, what tools we use, and how design influences product decisions.
  • Design exploration workflows that help marketers answer complex business questions quickly. Turn infinite ways to slice customer data into clear paths to decisions about product lines, creative strategy, channel selection, and growth opportunities.
  • Translate our insights (visual taste profiles, life stages, purchase motivations, brand affinities, size distributions) into clear mental models that marketers immediately understand.
  • Establish design patterns and standards for tables, filters, comparisons, and charts used across Customer Explorer. You'll build our first design system and work closely with engineering to keep it in sync.
  • Make activation obvious: show how insights sync to channels (Meta audiences, Klaviyo segments, programmatic), inform product decisions, and guide creative strategy.
  • Design for real data realities: handle empty/partial/dirty states, show confidence levels, set sensible defaults, reveal complexity progressively.
  • Work fast and visibly: ship low-friction prototypes, make quick trade-offs, create crisp artifacts (flows, rationales, design tokens), iterate in increments (V0/V1/V2).

Must Have

  • 7-9 years in product design, with at least 2 years working on data-heavy products used by business users
  • Fluency with AI-assisted workflows for ideation, research synthesis, and prototyping
  • Experience building within or expanding design systems (Material, Polaris, Carbon, or similar)
  • Genuine passion for marketing and helping brands find customers. You're curious about shopper behavior, creative resonance, and how insights drive growth.
  • At least one of these prior domains:
  • Customer exploration/analytics tools (segmentation, cohorts, slice-and-dice)
  • BI & data viz platforms (chart builders, dashboards, query interfaces)
  • CDP/identity tools (profiles, traits, events)
  • E-commerce analytics (LTV/retention, merchandising insights, funnels)
  • Ad/marketing tools (audiences, exclusions, creative insights)

Nice to Have

  • Shopify ecosystem familiarity
  • Direct experience with advertiser workflows (Meta Ads Manager, Google Ads)
  • Background in fashion, merchandising, or consumer brands
